What does my new girlfriend do for a living?  She is a bankruptcy attorney!  Now, I know generally what the words mean, but I made her explain to me in a little bit more detail exactly what it is she does every single day.  I mean, when you’re in love with someone you kind of want to know what they do and how they earn their cash, right?  So one night, over pizza from the corner grocery, plenty of beer, and with the Pistons game on full blast, she explained her occupation to me.  I guess what she does is give people tentative help.  Someone comes in to visit with her and she talks to them about his or her finances.  Usually that person is not doing that well, if you know what I mean.  Then she tells them what steps they have to take in order to get started, in other words, to sign a contract with her law firm.  Once they sign the papers and everything, she will give them a bill.  Don’t worry, she said to me, sometimes we can arrange to help them pay for it, but nine times out of ten their government assistance has to pay it off over a long period of time.  A lot of people have to go to court too.  In court, they declare a state of unconditional poverty.  They can do this, if their business has run out of money and they only have a fixed or limited amount of savings money left.  When she got done telling me this, I was pretty impressed.  It sounds like she really helps people a lot!
