MARKETING COMPANIES
A few years ago, I badly needed a job and applied for just about any position I saw advertised. I interviewed at marketing companies (some of which turned out to be pyramid schemes), for retail jobs, grocery stores, office jobs, real estate, and sales. The last one’s the one you have to watch out for. I interviewed to go door-to-door trying to sell ADT Security products and for another company that seemed to have completely ripped off ADT. I also interviewed and was even trained for another door-to-door salesman job where the product was supplemental cancer insurance. As you can see, neither product was insidious. People could really use supplemental cancer insurance and home security systems, but you’d think I was trying to sell people poison in a jar from how they reacted to me. I got doors slammed in my face. People almost spat at me and called the police to say that I was harassing them. I was even kicked out of a few suburbs. Worst of all, my co-workers and bosses kept telling me how I should want to quit and that I should keep refining my sales technique and working and working. I had no problem with any of that. I could even stand for people consistently treating me like dirt when I came to their door. But I wasn’t making any money and I didn’t have 6 months or so to keep trying to become a good salesman. So I ended up quitting all 3 jobs after about a month or so. I don’t regret it.
